Flop Bets Followed by Checks

Texas Hold ‘em poker players who are tight often bet the flop when they hit it, but then tighten up and check on the turn and river. They will call other bets, but rarely bet or raise because they are afraid they have been outdrawn and may be re-raised. They don’t want have to put out more than one bet, especially in limit cash games where the minimum bet doubles on the turn.

This style of poker playing is a weakness that can be exploited by observant players in late position. It you see a player engaging in this betting behavior, you can steal the pot. You can call pre-flop with more marginal, speculative hands if you are in late position. The chances are good that the tight weak player will check after the turn and you get to see a free card.

If you do bet out, the tight weak casino games player will probably call. If you are on a good draw with decent pot odds, it’s worthwhile to see the next card since it only costs one bet. However, if this player suddenly changes style, and re-raises, you should probably fold. You’ve been trapped by a better hand and should cut your losses.
